Health means the physical, mental and emotional well-being and capacity of people. Risk is the potential for harm to that health in the way we design and organise work and in the conditions in which work takes place. Safety is the deliberate set of actions and controls that remove or reduce those risks and that strengthen the conditions in which people can do their work well. Health is influenced by risks and moderated by safety. This definition is based on Karanikas and Zerguine (2025).

There are thousands of things that can go wrong in an organisation—and in thousands of ways. But we’ve learned we can’t rule out every risk with rules, procedures, or controls. Trying to eliminate every problem leaves us constantly surprised when the next one appears.

Safety is not the absence of failure. Safety is the presence of capacity.

So we shift our focus. Safety and risk management are no longer about preventing things from going wrong. Instead, they’re about making sure things go right—ensuring that we reach our goals, even in unpredictable, dynamic environments.

This shift means a change in mindset: less emphasis on compliance and control, and more investment in trust and craftsmanship. Resilience doesn’t come from avoiding mistakes. It comes from building capacity to succeed—even when surprises strike.

We want to set our people up for success.
